Saltwater Dreams: A Day of Sharks, Rays & Island Life

With only a few days to explore Belize, I knew I had to make every moment count. Famous for its crystal-clear Caribbean waters and vibrant marine life, this is the kind of place where snorkelling isn’t just an activity—it’s an experience. I booked the tour through GetYourGuide, which made everything simple and stress-free. With limited time, I wanted something well-organised and reliable, and this experience delivered exactly that. The full-day tour cost $176 AUD and included all snorkelling gear, multiple stops, snacks, drinks, and a traditional Belizean lunch—great value for a full day out on the water.

The tour was run by Ridge and Reef Adventures, a well-known local operator, and from the moment I arrived at the dock at 8am, everything felt smooth and professional. After a quick check-in and gear fitting, the excitement really started to build.

A Small Group, Big Experience

Just before departure, we were split into groups—and this is where I got lucky. Instead of being placed on a large boat, I joined a small group of just six people with our guide, Nick. This made the entire experience feel much more personal, relaxed, and flexible.

As we cruised out into the open water, the colour of the sea shifted into the most unreal shades of blue. That moment alone made me realise I had made the right choice.

Stop 1: Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Our first stop set the bar high. Within minutes of entering the water, we were surrounded by marine life—turtles gliding past, stingrays drifting along the seabed, and even sharks cruising nearby. Nick guided us through the area, pointing out different species and making sure everyone felt comfortable. Whether you’re a confident swimmer or not, flotation devices are available, so no one misses out.

It was the kind of experience that instantly makes you forget everything else. Honestly, I could’ve gone home happy after this alone.

Stop 2: Shark Ray Alley

A quick 10-minute boat ride later, we arrived at one of the most iconic snorkelling spots in Belize—and easily one of the most thrilling.

I didn’t hesitate and jumped straight in. Within seconds, nurse sharks were everywhere. Big, powerful, but surprisingly calm. Swimming alongside them felt surreal, almost unreal. It’s one thing to see sharks on TV, and another to be right there in their world.

Alongside the sharks, we saw huge schools of fish—snappers, jacks, and more—creating a constantly moving underwater scene.

Stop 3: Coral Gardens & “Ninja Turtles”

After the adrenaline rush, the next stop felt peaceful and almost meditative. At Coral Gardens, we swam alongside loggerhead turtles—locally nicknamed after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Everything slowed down here. The water was calm, the turtles moved gracefully, and for a moment, it felt like time stood still. It was one of those rare travel moments where you’re fully present.

Back on the boat, we were treated to fresh pineapple, watermelon, and cold drinks—simple but perfect after time in the sun.

Bonus Stop: Manatee Spotting

On the way toward lunch, we passed through the North Channel, where Nick slowed the boat and started scanning the water. After a few quiet minutes, we spotted one—a manatee. Seeing this gentle giant in the wild felt incredibly special. It’s not something you’re guaranteed to experience, which made it even more memorable

Island Break at Caye Caulker

By early afternoon, we reached the laid-back island of Caye Caulker. Lunch was included and gave us a taste of local Belizean cuisine—stewed chicken, coconut rice, fresh salad, and a drink.

Afterwards, we had around two hours of free time. I wandered through the colourful streets before heading to Lazy Lizard, a well-known spot right at The Split.

The atmosphere was lively, music playing, people relaxing in the water, and that carefree island energy everywhere. I tried their famous green drink—definitely on the sweeter side, but worth trying at least once.

Stop 4: Tarpon Feeding

Back in the water, things got wild again. Feeding tarpons—also known as “silver giants”—was easily one of the most adrenaline-filled moments of the day. Holding a sardine between my fingers, I barely had time to react before a massive fish launched itself out of the water and snatched it away.

It was fast, intense, and completely unexpected. My heart was racing—but I loved every second of it.

Final Stop: Stingray Bay & Seahorse Sanctuary

Our last stop was something truly special. In a shallow bay, stingrays glided gently around our feet. You could touch them, feed them, and observe them up close. Their texture was surprisingly smooth, and the whole experience felt calm, almost dreamlike—a complete contrast to the earlier adrenaline-filled moments.

We then visited a small seahorse sanctuary. We only spotted one, but that was enough. Seeing a seahorse in the wild for the first time felt like a tiny but unforgettable win.

Final Thoughts

As we made our way back to San Pedro, I couldn’t stop thinking about everything we had just experienced. Sharks, turtles, stingrays, manatees—all in one single day.

What made it even better was the small group setting and our guide Nick, who made the entire experience feel safe, fun, and personal. He even made sure I got back in time for my ferry, which was such a thoughtful touch.

If you’re visiting San Pedro, this tour is an absolute must. It’s not just about snorkelling—it’s about stepping into a completely different world, even if just for a day.
