El Tunco Stole My Heart (And I Never Really Left)

I visited El Salvador in January 2026 for the very first time. I spent a couple of days in San Salvador and then headed to El Tunco, where I ended up staying for 10 days while doing a surf camp at La Ola.

The minute I arrived, I fell completely in love with the place. There’s something about this tiny surf town—the laidback, sun-soaked, carefree lifestyle—that just pulls you in. What started as a short stay quickly turned into something more. I came back not once, but twice within two months… and in total, I ended up spending five weeks there.

El Tunco has a way of simplifying life. You realise you don’t need much: wake up, surf, maybe get a bit of work done, then spend the rest of the day with friends. Your uniform becomes swimmers, shorts, and a singlet—and you’re always ready for whatever the night brings.

The Ultimate Guide to El Tunco’s Nightlife

There’s always something happening here, but what truly makes the place special is the people. The locals welcome you in so effortlessly, and before you know it, you feel like part of the community. That’s what made the biggest difference for me—meeting incredible people and forming genuine friendships with locals. Through them, you get to experience the real El Tunco.

And then there are the sunsets. Every single evening, people gather—on the beach or at beachfront bars—to watch the sky explode into colour. Drinks in hand, music in the background, surrounded by good company… it’s a ritual you’ll never get tired of.

A special little mention goes to TenGo—a tiny local “tienda” that somehow becomes a social hub every night (or day). You can grab a drink inside and then just hang out front with everyone else. It’s simple, unpretentious, and exactly what El Tunco is about—good vibes, good people, and no need for anything fancy.

Mondays – Slow & Soulful

Mondays in El Tunco are all about recovery. After a big weekend, the town slows down, and the vibe becomes relaxed and easygoing. It’s the perfect night for a sunset session followed by a chilled beachside dinner.

You’ll still find music here and there, but nothing too intense. Monday nights at La Michela come alive with live music, creating the perfect laid-back vibe to ease into the week.

Popular spots include Erika’s, Taco Surf, and La Bocana—great food, ocean views, and a mellow atmosphere. Sometimes, these are the nights you end up appreciating the most: simple, slow, and full of laughs with friends.

A little insider tip: grab a takeaway drink and walk down the beach—Mondays are perfect for quiet ocean chats and stargazing away from the crowds.

Tuesdays – Music Takes Over

Tuesdays belong to Mopelia’s open mic night—a long-standing tradition that’s been part of the town’s soul since 2007. The energy here is unmatched. Travelers, locals, musicians—everyone comes together. It’s one of the only major events of the night, so it fills up quickly. If you want a seat, arrive early. You’re almost guaranteed to run into familiar faces—it’s that kind of place.

If you’re still feeling social, karaoke at La Michela is another fun option. Even if you’re not into singing, it’s impossible not to have a good time cheering people on.

Insider tip: don’t be afraid to chat to strangers here—Tuesday nights are where a lot of friendships in El Tunco actually begin.

Wednesdays – Midweek Madness

Wednesday is when things start to ramp up again. The famous Wet Wednesday at Dos Palmas is a must if you’re looking for a party. Think pool party meets bar crawl—a favourite among backpackers and travellers.

If partying isn’t your vibe (or you want to mix it up), salsa classes at La Bonita Beach Club are an amazing alternative. The night starts with a lesson—Salsa or Bachata—followed by a social dance session. Even if you’ve never danced before, it’s such a fun, welcoming environment. Plus, dancing right by the ocean at sunset? It doesn’t get much better than that.

Insider tip: even if you think you can’t dance—go anyway. Everyone’s learning, and it’s one of the easiest ways to meet people midweek.

Thursdays – Games & Good Vibes

Thursdays are all about beer pong tournaments.

La Michela becomes the centre of attention again, bringing together both locals and travellers. It’s competitive, chaotic, and ridiculously fun. The night usually kicks off fairly relaxed, but as more people arrive, the energy quickly builds. Teams form, tables fill up, and suddenly everyone is either playing, cheering, or making new friends between rounds.

It’s one of those nights where it’s super easy to socialise—even if you came alone, you’ll likely end up part of a team or at least with a group of people by the end of the night. Drinks are flowing, music is loud, and there’s always a mix of friendly competition and pure chaos. Whether you take the game seriously or just play for fun, it’s all about the vibe. Even if you’re not playing, it’s worth going just for the atmosphere—you can grab a drink, watch the games, and soak up one of the most social nights of the week in El Tunco.

Insider tip: arrive a bit earlier if you actually want to play—tables fill up fast once the night gets going.

Fridays – The Weekend Begins

Fridays mark the official start of the weekend—and El Tunco does not hold back. The town comes alive. Bars fill up, DJs take over, and the energy shifts instantly. You’ll find parties happening all along the strip, with music ranging from reggaeton to electronic to live bands. This is the night where everyone goes out—no excuses.

Bar hopping is the way to go. Start with sunset drinks, then move from spot to spot and just follow the music. You never really know where the night will end… and that’s the beauty of it. But if there’s one place you’ll almost definitely end up, it’s Kako’s. By late night, it becomes the place to be—packed, high-energy, and full of people dancing until the early hours.

Saturdays – Peak Chaos (In the Best Way)

Saturday is the biggest night of the week. Everything is louder, busier, and more electric. The town is packed, the dance floors are full, and the party goes late into the night (or early morning).

Kako’s is one of the main hotspots on a Saturday. It’s known for its high-energy atmosphere, packed dance floor, and DJs that keep the crowd going all night. If you’re looking for that classic wild party vibe—this is the place. La Bonita Beach Club also steps it up on Saturdays, often hosting bigger parties with DJs and a more upscale beach club feel. It’s a great place to start your night before heading deeper into the chaos. And of course, La Guitarra is always a solid option if you’re in the mood for live music mixed with a party crowd.

Expect big crowds, great DJs, and nonstop energy. If you only have one night in El Tunco—make it a Saturday.

Sundays – Reset & Recharge

After the madness, Sunday is all about slowing down again. Think beach time, good food, maybe a casual drink (or day drinking haha), and reflecting on the weekend. Some places still have music or small events, but overall, it’s a much calmer vibe.

It’s the perfect balance—and exactly what you need before doing it all over again.

Final Thoughts

El Tunco isn’t just a destination—it’s a feeling.

It’s where time slows down, where strangers become friends, and where days blend into nights in the best possible way. It teaches you that happiness doesn’t come from having more, but from needing less. I came for 10 days… and stayed for five weeks. That should tell you everything.

Special Thanks

A special thank you goes to Meg (who, like me, got completely sucked in) —for being the absolute best. For always being there, for listening when I needed a friend, and for all the fun, laughter, and countless litres of wine and rum we shared together.

From endless chats to our iconic walks with our “Balenciaga bag” (leaking plastic bag with bag of ice and bottle of wine), you made this experience even more unforgettable 🤍 LOVE YOU
